- The Emancipation of 1833 refers to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that abolished slavery in most British colonies.
- This historic act “freed” more than 800,000 enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, South Africa, and a small number in Canada. It received Royal Assent on August 28, 1833, and took effect on August 1, 1834.
